Hi all,
I’ll clarify what I mean by this – there’s something specific that I want:
1) Midnight Mass – This show suggests that Jesus and his disciples were vampires, with the whole Blood of Christ thing being taken literally.
The miracles Christ does are copied by a vampire, with the TV show linking miracles to dark supernatural.
I liked how this TV show made specific references to the Bible to provide a supernatural alt-History and contrast religion with evil. The vampire even uses the drinking of the Blood of Christ to turn others into vampires without telling the citizens, using religion for evil.
2) Fall of House of Usher – This show applies religion to modern day criticisms of capitalism, with characters experiencing pseudo-Divine retribution for what they’ve done.
I like the idea of a vengeful Christian God taking revenge on modern day issues. I’m interested in characters rebelling with Christian values, especially if the “Christian values” are outdated. For example, God taking revenge on people having sex or being LGBT. The book could be a criticism of Christianity/organised religion.
3) Jesus Christ: Superstar – I like how the musical makes the point that God sacrifices Jesus Christ for his message to spread. Jesus shouts to God that he will “drink your cup of poison”, commanding him to “nail me to your cross”. I LOVED how the book humanised Jesus, presenting him as the victim of God.
Judas also argues that God predestined Judas to betray Jesus, essentially damning him to Hell to – again – spread Christianity.
In short, I am FASCINATED by stories that criticise Christianity in their narrative, humanising those who disobey Christianity and presents religion as inflexible and draconian.
