I’ve read 30+ books this year and feel like I’m out of options (not true I know), but I’m having some issues finding a few new books. Favorites of the year have been: Boyparts by Eliza Clark, If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio, Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth, The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I like a book with a main character that you’re kind of supposed to hate, intense thriller-y vibes, and maybe a heartbreaking story line. TIA for your suggestions!

‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison is broadly fits this as a southern gothic book. Different to the books you’ve read but I found John Wyndham books like ‘Day of the Triffids’ and ‘The Midwich Cuckoos’ creepy as well. As is his book of short stories ‘The Seeds of Time’. These are sci-fi.
– Vicious (Villains, #1) by V.E. Schwab is a thriller book dealing with blurred lines between villains and heroes.
