Hunting a random book

I have a friend that’s trying to hunt down an old book her mother read forever ago. The book follows a man who swaps bodies with a cat then has to solve a mystery in said cats body. This would have been 1991 or before. That’s all she remembers and google hasn’t been a help. Thought I’d see if reddit had any answers 😊
