Hello everyone. I am curious about two types of Appalachian stories. Firstly, I’m curious about not-human and not-deer stories; of a horror vein you could say. Secondly, I am curious about stories which tell nonfiction accounts of just what life was and is like in Appalachia. Thank you in advance.

Hillbilly elegy by JD Vance
Hillbilly Elegy.
Born Fighting: how the Scots Irish shaped America, by Jim Webb.
The Silver John stories by Manly Wade Wellman.
Sharyn McCrumb’s Ballad series.
Demon Copperhead
Slewfoot ? It might be Appalachia
Nonfiction I would suggest the Foxfire books. Can be hard to read because it is transliterated mountain English speech (grammatically incorrect/verbatim). But some of the lore and wisdom contained therein is absolutely astounding.
Stay and Fight might work, though it’s less horror and more gay found family
Alessandro Portelli, _They Say In Harlan County: An Oral History_. All true. This book will blow your mind.
The Glass Castle. It starts out west but ends up in Appalachia. True story
