Suggestions for religious fiction (but not “religious fiction”)

I’m interested in religion and especially Christianity as a theme but find that finding anything half way literary in this realm can be difficult.

I loved Eco’s Name of the Rose and Ian Caldwell’s the Fifth Gospel. I’ve also enjoyed some stuff where questions of religion and moral philosophy are present but less overt (a la Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited). But if you’re aware of others, send them this way!

PS- No disrespect to anyone who prefers the dan brown style of Vatican thriller etc- just not as much my thing.
