(No/mild spoilers for the movie, will only be discussing themes)
I always loved this film and would love if anyone else who's seen it has some recs, or maybe if you're reminded of a book by this summary, please let me know!
In short: It's a historical fiction horror film set in England, set specifically in the early 1900's (but I love any and all historical fiction especially earlier than 1900s) the main character is addicted to opiates and there are huge religious themes, while not being an overtly 'religious' movie.. if that makes sense? Many of the characters commit atrocities in the name of religion, and the main character struggles with his own. There's other elements like forbidden love (more a fan of gay romance but if it's well-written and realistic I will enjoy it either way) and of course, the horror and gore aspects, which I love dark themes in my books. The movie itself leans a bit more whimsy, but I love dark realism and mental illness themes. If this reminds you of anything feel free to share. Thanks for reading 🙂
