I’ve had a really niche desire recently to read a book that takes place during an Armageddon-scale event (think “Hail Mary Project” or “the Three Body Problem”) but where the book follows the lives of folks who do not / cannot impact the outcome of the resolution of the event.
I love a good hero’s journey, but I want something that’s more emotional and in touch with what it means to be human. A book that tackles questions like what does it mean to be saved rather than being the savior? How does it feel to be powerless in the grand scheme- do we still hope to make a difference or do we live everyday knowing we cannot or that the scale of our impact is too small.
I’d love any take on this from comedic to serious. I think a movie that humorously did something similar is “Don’t look up”. I’m also open to both happy and sad endings.
