I recently listened to The Magus by John Fowles and thought it was amazing. As I do with many e-books and audiobooks, I bought a physical copy after listening to it and started adding physical booksmarks from my audio bookmarks. While doing this I noticed most passages were slightly different, though nothing too noticable. But then I got to a bookmark that is completely different from audiobook to book – the main character answers a question Yes instead of No, and the entire conversation changes, to the point where the entire passage I bookmarked from the audio is not there in the physical book.

My physical book (Back Bay Books / Little, Brown and Company) says Revised Version, so I assume this is the obvious answer – the audiobook I listened to is the original version (though the audio is 26 hours long so I just initially assumed it was revised since that seems pretty long). The audiobook says Naxos Audiobooks Complete Classics Unabridged, read by Nicholas Boulton.

So assuming I listened to the unrevised version, I guess I have a different question: if anyone that reads this post has happened to read both, what are the significant differences between the two? I would assume I would like the revised edition more – the author’s wish – however all that I’ve seen so far, going back and forth between book and audiobook, I like the original version more (if the audiobook is infact the og version).
