I'm interested in how reincarnation or continued consciousness after death is depicted in novels. I'm not particularly looking for any religious context (ie not like The Five People You Meet in Heaven) and not about watching the people on earth after you leave (ie not like The Lovely Bones), but more along the lines of Cloud Atlas, or science fiction, or anything about a universal consciousness. Fantasy worlds are fine, but am particularly looking at the idea of contributing to improving or caretaking the world and a just society, because you don't really leave it on death. I would really appreciate any suggestions for good reads in that area. I'm not sure if there is much out there, but thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore
*The Years of Rice and Salt*, by Kim Stanley Robinson. Alternative history novel (the Black Death kills 99% of Europe, instead of 33%) that heavily involves reincarnation of the main characters.
