I'm looking for a fictional book in the range from 1850-1920s that involves some kind of monster-murder-mystery. As for what kind? I'm indifferent.

I'm not a fan of fantasy elements like magic/elves/fairies etc. but if there is a book with these elements that addresses them in a dark and mature way, then that's perfect for me.

    any suggestions?

    1. George__Parasol on

Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman comes to mind.

Takes place roughly 1930, a WWI veteran and his new wife move to a small village in Georgia so he can write the history of the infamous nearby plantation owned by his ancestor. While the town is quaint and peaceful, he soon catches the undercurrent of an unspoken dread within his new community, all of which seems to stem from the ruined plantation and the violent stories from its past.

    2. The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. Involves time travel. Switches back and forth from near future to 1845. Missing crewmembers of a shipwreck. What really happened? Romance and sexual tension.
