My 8yo son loves Astérix, Gaston, and Marsupilami graphic novels. Does anyone have any other recommendations for French books for this age? They can be graphic novels or novels, and they can be translated into French from the original.

The Little Prince is the classic
Le petit Nicolas, a Sempé-Goscinny classic 🙂
I’m assuming French is a second language to English? I will suggest two things: one, run with stuff he’s already interested in. And two, avoid books translated from English to French – they read VERY weirdly, and it’s just a miserable experience. If you get the chance to set him loose on a French bookstore, French section of a library, or even just French Amazon, encourage him to try out new things and genre.
I checked out a couple books from the Hachette Jeunesse imprint “Livre de poche jeunesse” and liked them – they’re short chapter books aimed at younger readers, and you might be able to comb through to see if there’s something he’d like. One I started with was Au nom du roi… by Annie Jay.
(I also liked the middle grade series Sissi by F. Féret-Fleury, which has lovely illustrations, but I think asking an 8 year old boy to read about princesses, even the historical kind who love horseback riding… 💦)
