Apperantly what I’m about to describe does not count as a happy ending and therefore not a romance novel so I sadly wasn’t able to post it on the romance book suggestion Reddit so I thought I’d ask here instead. I was hoping to get some recommendations for tragic books with semi hopeful endings. l've seen this a lot more in Asian dramas where because I think there's this more culturally prominent belief in reincarnation, a next life, and fate even the saddest dramas often end with somewhat happier endings. For example "More than Blue" the miniseries really emphasis this idea of finding each other in their next life even if they can no longer be together in the current one. In "the Red Sleeve" it is alluded that they are reunited at some point once they both die. I just read "If he had been with me" and it was honestly somewhat too depressing and I ended the book going "that's it"?
And it's fine if the tragedy is really intense, I just want it to end with some sort of illusion to the fact that they find each other again. Sorry I know that's a super specific and paradoxical thing to request but I'm in the mood to cry but not be so depressed I wish I hadn't read the book. thanks everyone so much in advance.
Quote from more than blue: “I’m grateful to have met you in this life. Thank you for being my family. I’ll find you in my next life”

    1. maybe the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. There are nine books out now and it has its emotional highs and lows throughout. Definitely check out content warnings first cus some of the lows were painful.

    2. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy and Maureen –also Miss Benson’s Beetle all by Rachel Joyce. Maybe this book triptych (plus one) fits the bill?
