I’m reading Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck and it just seems to perfectly capture life in America in the inter war period.

I’m not American so it’s been incredibly insightful into the history and culture. I love it so far.

I would love to read similar classics that capture that slice of life for other countries, or other American time periods.
    Any suggestions?

    1. Mina drömmars stad (Swedish). No clue what the official English translation is or even if there is one, but direct translation it’s “city if my dreams”.

    2. Roth, “Radetzkymarsch”, and Doderer, “Die Strudelhofstiege” both show and examine life in Vienna in the interwar period. More recently, basically everything written by Thomas Bernhard is still pertinent today.
