I love these books. I read them when I first moved to San Francisco back in 2008, at least all of the books that were published by then.

As a new SF transplant, I immediately fell in love with Mary Ann. While I didn’t find an apartment or a community as easily as she did, I eventually found my place. I moved here as a queer 22 year old without any money or a job. Very smart, I know. I eventually found my tribe though.

Anyway, I was given a set for my birthday earlier this year and I’ve finally gotten around to reading them again.

I’m 16 years older. I’m smarter. Have my own place and a good job. A great relationship. Best friends that are there for me and each other.

Reading the first book hits different now. The awe of San Francisco is still there, but I’m not that Mary Ann anymore. And that kinda makes me sad.

I’m not going to go into the miniseries or the Netflix show, as they’re completely different beasts.

    Anyone else love this series?

I’m off tomorrow and I may go down to the Buena Vista for an Irish coffee. Shame they took out the pay phone, though.
