I’ve never read a traditional horror novel, but I enjoy “disturbing” reads like Tender Is The Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica, Boy Parts by Eliza Clark, and Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. My favorite horror movie is Midsommar, The Witch, A Haunting of Hill House series and Midnight Mass series (and literally anything and everything by Mike Flannigan). I like horror films, but I am a little picky because I don’t like slashers or crime related stories. I LOVE anything that uses horror and religion together.
I want something that is sad and scary. Something that uses horror as an element to tell a deeper story. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty is excellent. Better than the movie, and I love the movie.
**Between Two Fires** (Christopher Buehlman) is a horror fantasy set in France during the Black Death that leans *heavily* into religious horror.
**The Only Good Indians** (Stephen Graham Jones) is a contemporary horror set on an Ojibwe reservation that explores the modern-day discrimination against, and trauma experienced by, Native Americans.
