What novels or memoirs capture being a child in a way that feels immersive and authentic?
I know many, many books broadly fit this bill. But I have a certain vibe in mind.
I’m not looking for books written for a young audience, though I’m not against quality YA I suppose. Nor do I have in mind adventures about a young “chosen one” or precocious hero.
Also not the right vibe would be stories written from a distantly adult perspective.
I mean stories that capture the feel, texture, vividness of experience and specific concerns we all sort of vaguely half-remember from once having been children.
I hope to learn more about how great authors write in a way that is neither nostalgic nor too removed.
I have a few books in mind as well, but I’m curious what yours are.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
Room by Emma Donoghue really accurately captures the mindset of a 5 year old, albeit one in extraordinary circumstances.
