My dad has picked the first 3 books and says it’s my turn! I recently got back into reading so I have no idea where to start. His only direction was nothing too girly, whatever that means. They all tend to be murder mysteries which I’m okay with, as long as there’s an audiobook because I listen on my work commute.

    Books we’ve read:
    Invisible, James Patterson
Unsolved, James Patterson (these were a series)
Think twice, Harlan Coben (loved this author’s style more than JP, disappointed I didn’t realize it was a long series before reading and this one seems to be towards the end?)

    Thank you!!!!

If you’re okay with true crime, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamarra is good. It’s about the investigation to find the Golden State Killer.

Our Homesick Songs by Emma Hooper has an interesting style of writing that I definitely enjoyed reading and can imagine it would be very good in audiobook form, too. It’s about a boy trying to bring fish back to his island village in Eastern Canada before all of the villagers move away

    3. Honestly if you’re into murder mysteries I think it’s a really solid choice to go with some of the Philip Marlowe detective novels by Raymond Chandler. The long goodbye for example is an excellent place to start.

Also I want to add that’s so f****** cool that you have a book club with your dad. Seriously.

    4. This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger is very good, not “too girly”, and would appeal to both of you I think. I’m a woman and often recommend books to my dad and I think he’d like this one. It might be a nice change of pace from the murder mysteries, too.

I wonder if he’d like Blake Crouch. Dark Matter was really good and fast paced (one I recommended to my dad that he liked).

I love the father-daughter book club idea, by the way! My dad and I have always shared a love of reading and it’s been fun connecting with him this way, especially now that we’re sharing recommendations with each other. Might have to try a little book club of two with him myself 🙂

    5. who’s killing the old…( bank robbers, girl friends, movie stars ) have been fun books

    6. I’d say James by Percival Everett or Playground by Richard Powers. Both are fantastic and not murder mysteries. There is lots to talk about!

I love Tana French- the Dublin Murder Squad novels are excellent. I love a twisty story.
I’m on a huge Harlan Coben kick right now- I have two favorite narrators of his books Steven Weber and Scott Brick. Both add so much.
Another awesome audiobook is The Boys in the Boat – the narrator is the wonderful Edward Herrmann (Lorelei’s Dad on Gilmore Girls). Amazing story and so much better than the movie of the same name.
