Hey all! I'm looking for some beginner chapter books to help keep my second grader interested in reading. They are growing as a reader, but are still slightly below grade level, so we are trying to encourage them to read aloud to us as much as possible. Obviously, the best way to do this is to find books that interest them!
The book types they are currently interested in are fantasy, adventure, science, and slightly spooky (but not full on scary!). Again, we are hoping to find short "beginner" chapter books that are challenging but still within second/third grade reading level. (No graphic novels please… My child has plenty and they are difficult to read aloud!)
Child's current faves are: The Magic Treehouse series, the Dragon Masters series, and the Desmond Cole, Ghost patrol series.

This might be a terribly obvious suggestion, but have you tried the sorcerer’s stone?
