Not the cheap thriller for thrills sake books where increasingly more shocking things happening to the protagonist are the only way to further the story…

I like books that focus on the decision making in situations of disaster: to hunker down or head out and hedge your bets? To impose rationing on a community or let every man fend for himself? Extra points for anything with early chaos and the impending dread of horrors yet to come. Stories that begin with the advent/outbreak of disaster are my preferred e.g. from the point of getting lost in the woods, rapid spread of new virus, national power outage… but post apocalyptic is welcome too.

Some particular favourites of mine in fiction (to better paint the picture) are Moon of The Turning Leaves by Waubgeshig Rice, How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff and The Death of Grass by John Christopher. Non-fiction favourites are Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, Columbine by Dave Cullen and Alive by Piers Paul Read.

I look forward to reading your favourites!
