    1. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara – sprawling, emotional book where the death of a MC creates a devastating void for the friends he left behind, exploring themes of trauma, love, and friendship.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt – a murder occurs early in the story, and much of the novel explores the psychological and emotional fallout among a group of tightly-knit friends at an elite university.

Joe Abercrombie is always full of surprises.
The novel Taipan by James Clavell fits in as well.

    3. Does it count if they don’t die, but are injured enough to be out the rest of the book? If so, *Un Lun Dun* by China Mieville fits perfectly.

    4. Carrion Comfort and Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. In both books the character you presume is the main hero character dies midway.

Cynthia Voigt’s “Wings of a Falcon” is YA fantasy, but with a fascinating pair of lead characters.

Oriel is a natural leader. Charismatic, quick to understand what needs to be done, and courageous enough to do it. He’s also callous, thoughtless, and in constant expectation for the rest of the world to shape itself around him. Not entirely his own fault, this. Some of it comes from the harsh environment he was raised in, and the lack of any sort of real childhood. Griff is his loyal companion, who knows Oriel’s flaws but is still willing to follow him and to sacrifice everything for him because he can see the good that Oriel can do.

The main focus of the book is the tension between the two sides of Oriel’s character, and the death that happens is a result of that tension.

    6. It was very upsetting if you don’t want to me spoiled don’t read further…..
