Looking for a book for my niece who is turning 11. She consumes a lot of pretty grownup media, feels strongly about the importance of representation in books and movies, and does a lot of eye rolls about heteronormativity when we deign to show her “old” movies. She’s a voracious reader so I’m not too concerned with the reading level, more the appropriateness of the content, but it doesn’t have to be squeaky clean either. Just… not the super dark shit I was reading at 11.
She enjoys some magic/fantasy and anime, and her parents are pretty hard sci fi nerds. I’ve been searching around for queer YA that might fit the bill but a lot of it has romance and that isn’t really her bag. So I’m hoping you might have suggestions for me! TIA!

The House in the Cerulean Sea. YA fantasy with fun, supernatural characters. One of them happens to be gay but that isn’t a major plot point.
