I rewatched the Lord of the Rings, which I have read (and the Hobbit and the Silmarillion) many years ago. I was struck by its amazing story that still resonates, but also its great wisdom. Gandalf speaking about all those who live in such times, Faramir’s quotes about bright swords and the things we truly love, etc.
I realized there are few books that seem to reach as deep while also offering a fabulous story as well. The Last Unicorn comes to mind. A Wrinkle in Time is another. A few come close – His Dark Materials, Redwall, the Voyage of the Dawn Treader…
Can anyone suggest more books like this? I am not interested in books that offer wit that masquerades as wisdom (Pratchett feels like it fits in that category), nor flowery writing that feels very fancy but doesn’t have much substance (The Night Circus). But otherwise am curious what fantasy novels y’all might know that offer these deep insights!!
