i’d suggest looking into some of the spark notes “no fear shakespeare” produced texts with modern translations on the opposite side of the page. it came in handy for a production of a midsummer night dream i was in and i think they’d be really good for understanding the classical language! you get the real deal and the translation text doesn’t feel limiting or like it’s babying you, really got me back into shakespeare tbh

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all time favorites.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is really good too.
The Bell Jar is a good “modern classic”, but probably not everyone’s cup of tea.

Frankenstein is written at about a modern 6th grade reading level. Dracula is at about 8th grade.
