I have a friend of mine who speaks English as a second language, and really wants to delve deep into English literature but I’m mainly familiar with classics ( they can be a bit tricky to get through) so I’m out of my depth here. Even genres like comedy sometimes have difficult wordplay and references to cultural/historical phenomena that aren’t so relatable to her.

While books written by Colleen Hoover are legible for my friend, she finds the topics uninspired and not well written, because she has high standards in literature due to reading many great poems and novels from her own country (Egypt).

So for her birthday gift I’d appreciate books that are:
    1. Engaging (not slow paced, strong introduction)
    2. Intermediate in vocabulary (not so casual like a TikTok-famous book but not so difficult to understand)
    3. And about a fairly intriguing topic (perhaps mystery, but preferably not romance.)

P.S: not trying to judge the aforementioned books and styles, or even TikTok as a platform, but they’re not what she likes.

i’d recommend The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It’s beautifully written with a touch of mystery and magic but without being overly complex in language or full of obscure cultural references.
