Long story short; an older teenager (think 16-18, f) has now suddenly gotten a lot more free time. I'm trying to get a list of suggestions for them at request of relatives and am asking for any at all as I'm just one guy.

Some sort of escapism is preferred, please if possible include anything that may stand out as distressing or triggering, I will filter as needed. Sorry for being vague but do not want to take any chances in regards to sharing information.

These might be a little young for that age range, but I still loved them at that age: Two Princesses of Bamarre, Ella Enchanted, and Fairest by Gail Carson Levine, and Princess Academy by Shannon Hale

And then Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. This has some violence, but the characters are kids and I’m pretty sure it’s like pg-13 ish

And maybe The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke?

    3. It would help if we knew what kind of things they already like–books, movies, video games, hobbies, whatever.

Try Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, The Pushcart War (below that reading level but good nonetheless), The Diary of Anne Frank, Code Name Verity, Julie of the Wolves.

    4. If you’re concerned about triggers, the StoryGraph website has user-submitted content warnings for every book – I’ve found this really helpful.

Anyways, if you’re okay with science-fiction (albeit much more focused on the characters than anything science-y), you could try **The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet** by Becky Chambers. One of my favourite books ever, and so sweet and heartwarming.
