I need to cheer up. My mood is persistently low. I want the funniest most gut-busting books you've ever read, preferably not something romantic or overly sexual. It seems like 90% of funny books out are really just funny romance novels. That's not what I'm looking for. I want a literary sitcom. I want golden era Simpsons in book form. Does such a thing exist?

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome

I’d also suggest Terry Pratchett if you like fantasy
***The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy***
The Pushcart War by Jean Merrill (extremely funny book written as a “pop history” of a fictional war between the pushcarts and trucks in the streets of New York — I’ve read it at least a dozen times over the years and it cracks me up every time.)
basically anything by Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams
Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson.
Bobbie Faye’s Very (very, very, very) Bad Day, and it’s sequel Bobbie Faye’s (kinda, sorta, not exactly) Family Jewels are both very fun and entertaining.
Also check out the Spellman series by Lisa Lutz, you’ll be laughing your butt off the whole time!
George Carlin’s books are always great for a laugh.
I also really love Fannie Flagg’s books. There’s a few sad or dark moments, but overall, they’re very funny and uplifting books. I always feel better after reading them, especially “Standing in the Rainbow” and “Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven.”
