I'm always intrigued by the arguments and concepts I see people borrow from the works of Judith Butler, but upon attempting to read her publications I find that I seem to lack some baseline level of required knowledge. It's very theoretical to the point where I have to stop every few paragraphs to properly digest the information, and this has made it difficult to make much headway. Are there any suggestions for books on gender study to delve into first that might make publications as theoretical as Butler's more accessible in the long run?

Mind you I don't mean suggestions like Feminists Don't Wear Pink or Women Don't Owe You Pretty. I've read both and lived long enough as a woman to find a lot of the opinions offered in those sorts of books redundant to what I've already come go know.
