some questions about “the count of Monte Cristo” Mercedes ending

i haven't read the book yet but according to what i know Mercedes (and Albert) gives up all her money and ends up poor and destitute in the end. if it's true, in my opinion, it really sucks because there's really no reason Mercedes should feel guilty. (and also the count tried to help her financially but didn't because of her PRIDE? what does that mean? i think she has her pride even when she recieves the money. like she didn't do anything wrong to him)

basically i think Dumas make Mercedes feels too much guilt when it is totally unecessary. it's almost like trying to give Mercedes a sad ending without enough reason..

so my questions are

1) is it true. that she ends living poor? how does she end up in the book?

2) why wouldn't she receive help from the count? why would she feel guilty?
