So, I've been trying to make fantasy/romantasy/romance happen for me because that has been the genre pervasive on tiktok but aside from some exceptions, I just don't think I genuinely enjoy those books.
Below are some books I've really enjoyed. From what I can gather, I mostly like contemporary fiction that is rooted in reality with characters that feel real and that have some grit. I also like a thriller/mystery but it's not my prevailing genre. The romance is more of a B plot rather than the A plot. I like historical fiction but admittedly I am burnt out from WW2 historical fiction after reading The Wartime Book Club (which was not great), so I think I need a break from that.
Here are the books I've really liked:
My sister’s keeper
A thousand Splendid Suns
Kite Runner
The Help
The Nightingale
Big Little Lies
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Good Girl’s Guide Series
Before we were yours

Beartown by Fredrik Backman
Life of Pi, by Yann Martel for that contemporary fiction via a different culture vibe.
The Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser for historical fiction. Hilarious, scandalous, and educational all wrapped together.
