    Hi,

All of my life I’ve hated to read. It’s always been boring and I usually just fall asleep, whether it’s broad daylight or dark outside. Funny thing is, when it’s a book with illustrations I can stay awake the whole time!

My Adv. Lit. teacher Mrs. Rayburn says I’m far too gifted to feel like this and I’m wasting my life on drawing and sketching. She says only little kids like books with illustrations like comics or graphic novels and I need to grow up. She says they aren’t real books and an A student should have read a book on his/her/their own by now and that it’s a shame my brain is being wasted on garbage 🚮 without any substance.

I tried all of Mrs. Rayburn’s book suggestions and I don’t mean to cuss, but honestly they all SUCKED. I fell asleep 😴 on all of them.

I’m not popular in school, I’ve been bullied, I don’t have any friends and I’m usually laughed at by the other kids because I live with my Nana and she‘s on a fixed income so we are very poor and I don’t wear the best clothes or shoes. Kids are really mean 😢 to me, even the girls call me a geek and I eat all alone at lunch, so I can’t ask anyone else to suggest anything for me to read.

Can anyone help me with finding exciting books for kids my age PLEASE?

    Thank You,

    Noah Schmidt

Your teacher is absolutely wrong for telling you this. I’m a grown adult and I love mangas, comic books, and graphic novels! My husband and my 14 year old son love them too!

Don’t force yourself to read things you don’t like, or that you’re not interested in. Read what makes you happy!

Woah! Kid, I’d love to give you some book recommendations. But for goodness sake, delete this and re-post without your name, your teacher’s name or any other personal details that might make it easy for someone to identify you.

Do it quickly. And when you re-post, tell us what kind of movies, games and graphic novels you like, that you need books suitable for a 13-year-old, and that’s pretty much it. That will help people recommend things you’re more likely to enjoy.

      But delete this post!

    3. Your literature teacher is just flat out wrong about graphic novels aka comics. They cover a wide range of genres and styles and are close to equal to word-only books in quality at the top end. It’s been a while since I’ve been thirteen to recommend anything but I can if you want to hear them.

      Hi.

First off I’d take you name off the post and change your teacher’s name if that’s her real one. There are a lot of weirdos and perverts on the internet and you want to keep that seperate from your Real Life.

I mean, I’m a weirdo and a pervert too – but you don’t want people knowing who you are.

Graphic novels are perfectly fine to read, so I’d disagree there, but ideally they wouldn’t be the only thing that you read. Just like pizza’s great, but you don’t want to eat only that.

When I was your age I found it helped sometimes to read in bitesize chunks – read a chapter, then do a little sketch of something in it and then go back to it.

What kinds of films, TV and video games do you like? We might be able to find you something suitable about the kind of thing you’re interested in. Which were the books your teacher recommended which you didn’t like? No one will be mad at you for not liking the classics – my teacher recommended books to me I hated and I read books she hated!

Alternatively, go to your local library and talk to your librarian. Librarians LOVE recommending books, and it’s a really cheap (free) way to read without having to risk losing money on something you don’t like.
