I’ve been thinking about how mental illness is portrayed in Neuromancer and was surprised to find very little analysis or discussion about it in google scholar. It seems like there’s a lot to unpack, especially with characters like Armitage, Case, and Riviera, who all seem to suffer from significant mental health issues. For example, Armitage’s psychological instability, Case’s drug addiction and self-destructive tendencies, and Riviera’s disturbing behavior could all be explored in greater depth.

What do you think? Is there more to say about mental illness in Neuromancer that hasn’t been widely discussed? Or are there other aspects of the book that overshadow this theme? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on the subject.

Is there a specific reviewer or critic that you would have expected such a analysis from?
