Compassionate books like “As I Lay Dying” or “Grapes of Wrath” that are about a family dealing with a tragedy or difficult circumstances?

I quite enjoyed Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and especially Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, books that are quite different from each other but also have certain similarities; Both are about families dealing with difficulties (poverty, death). I guess you could call them socially realistic, humanistic, compassionate, but they both touch the heart.
