Every year, during the month of October, I like to read strictly books belonging to the genres in the title. Problem is, I'm also very into classic novels and I feel like I've read every well-known one that fits the criteria I mentioned. So, I'm looking for more!

I've already read Frankenstein, Dracula, A Study in Scarlet, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Haunting of Hill House, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Carmilla, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The War of the Worlds and most of Agatha Christie's mystery novels and William Shakespeare's plays.

    Suggestions are very much appreciated!

    1. – Ray Bradbury has some low key horror books: Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Halloween Tree and maybe The Illustrated Man
      – Beloved by Toni Morrison: ghost story set in the 1800s
      – The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Written in 1898. The Bly House series on Netflix is based on this book
      – Six Gothic Tales by Daphne de Maurier
      – Legend of Sleepy Hallow and other Stories by Washington Irving
      – The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne: ghost/curse story
      – Carmilla by Sheridan Le Frau
      – The Vampyre by John Polidori (1819) – from the same contest as Frankenstein.

    2. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is a great one to read in October. Some of the best writing out there IMO 🙃 A new horror that I just read “We Used to Live Here” by Marcus K was insanely spooky and very well written.

Can’t go wrong with good ol’ Lovecraftian horror. My favorite is At The Mountains of Madness. Also, if you’re interested, in my American Gothic special topics class I advise for, they read Interview With The Vampire, The Virgin Suicides, and The Shining.
