Lovecraftian-like books or authors but more modern.

Title. Something with the same feel as Lovecraft works but written more recently (lets say early to mid 20th century as the oldest).

Doesn't have to be in the the Lovecraftian mythos or even be sci-fi. What I'm looking for is, again, that feeling of dread and a imaginative story.

Bonus points for a good payoff at the ending, meaning even if not everything is explained at least enough to have an idea of whats going on. I don't like how sometimes authors take the "unknowable horror" theme to just not write an actual ending that ties the story together and leave everything open ended.
