I am having the hardest time staying interested in a book. I start reading and immediately get bored and go back to doom scrolling. Immediate book closure if there’s continuous cursing, alcohol or anything sexual or sexual trauma related. I also don’t really like overly dark themes (like morbid), but thrillers are ok. I just want a good story of some kind. I need suggestions. TIA!

*How We Got To Now* by Steven Johnson

It’s a nice read about how specific technologies, from glass, to refrigeration, to telecommunications, made modern urban life possible.

I just picked up The Only Girl in the World, a memoir by Maude Julien and it was RIVETING. Just a nuts story

    3. Do you like crazy non fiction stories? I couldn’t put down Remembering Satan by Lawrence Wright. It’ll frustrate and fascinate you if you’re into it. It’s about the most extreme case of the satanic panic of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

These are from my 5* Good Reads list. I also can’t deal with drawn out openings, where you’re only invested at the 150+ page point. So these were books that hooked me early on.

      For full size reads:
      – Kindred – Octavia Butler
      – Between Two Fires – Christopher Buehlman
      – Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir

      For shorter reads:
      – Piranesi – Susanna Clarke
      – A Short Stay in Hell – Steven L Peck
      – Elder Race – Adrian Tchaikovsky

    5. All Systems Red is the first Murderbot Diaries book. It’s a novella, so it’s a quick read, and pretty pacey. Some swearing, no alcohol, absolutely no sex.

Magician by Raymond E Feist, trust me, it’s well worth a read and leads on to dozens of follow-ups.

    7. The Mummy Case by Elizabeth Peters, part of the Amelia Peabody series. Nicely showcases the hugely entertaining cast of characters and wonderful dialogue. Intelligently humorous late Victorian Egyptian archeology mysteries. Funny, well-written, and rereadabke. I fell in love with Amelia (respectfully, of course) many years ago and gave not regretted it.

    8. If it’s not already been mentioned, The House in the Cerulean Sea is charming, sweet and different.

    9. for a reader, this post is extremely vague and subjective…. what is non-boring to you might be boring to others. why dont you just look for some and try reading it and dnf if you just dont like it??

    10. I’d recommend the queen’s gambit; the book the Netflix shows based on. I think the writing style & premise is enough to keep you invested and it’s fairly short so it’s not too big of a commitment
