I just read “Nothing to Envy” about life in North Korea, and I’m looking for similar books that explain what life is like for people in different parts of the world and how their society came to be. I want to understand more about places like Russia, the Middle East, South Africa, etc. Would also like to read more about Ireland’s Troubles.

This might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi is a graphic novel about her childhood and during the Islamic revolution in Iran.
