I’ve been getting quite into gothic novels lately, and I’m looking for more to sate my appetite. Bonus points if they have one of those painted covers with the girl in a pretty dress fleeing from a mansion.

I’d really like something where the male lead… or at least one of the men interested in the heroine… is cruel and sinister, an oppressive force constantly chasing after her, who does genuinely evil things. There should be lots of mystery, suspense, and twists. I’d like the heroine to be plucky and brave as well. It can deal with taboos but it can’t be anything smutty.

Some that I’ve enjoyed include The Shivering Sands by Victoria Holt, Dragonwyck by Anya Seton, A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott, and The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe. I’m very much enjoying Jane Eyre too.

    Thanks!

If you want to be REALLY Gothic take a look at The Monk by Lewis

Also, more to the Bronte era: The Woman in White and The Moonstone by Collins are very good. He wrote many more; xo if you enjoy those look at his other titles.

Mignon G. Eberhart and Mary Roberts Rinehart are 2 big names in the Gothic Genre between the early 1900’s to the 1960’s or so

The Leavenworth Case by Green is a turn of the last century mystery/romance
