Why didn't the black tower curse dissolve when the gentleman died, since he was the one who caused it? I remember someone (Norrel I think) saying that curses and magic tend to go away when the person or fairy who cast it dies.

Why was the gentleman so interested in Stephen? It never seemed to be explained why the gentleman wanted to endow Stephen with so many gifts and wanted to hang around him so often. What did I miss?
