Hi y’all! I have had a hankering for books about exploration/sea travel/piracy in the 1600-1700s. I just finished Enemy of All Mankind by Steven Johnson and The Wager by David Grann, and loved both! Grann’s other work is on my TBR list, but I’m really enjoying this particular arena of world history. Has anyone read any other great books about this time period? I’m not opposed to fiction, but I’ve really enjoyed these driving, excellently communicated historical narratives. I’m looking for more of the feeling of expanse, uncertainty, and danger. Not necessarily a romanticization of the era. Thanks! 🏴‍☠️🏝️

Fiction but Deep as the Sky, Red as the Sea is a great historical fiction book set in the South China Sea in the 19th Century dealing with conflicts between the Chinese Emperor/European allies and pirates, told from the POV of a pirate queen.

    2. The Pirates’ Code: Laws and Life Aboard Ship by Rebecca Simon is one I currently have on my TBR. She has some great videos on tik tok regarding debunking pirate myths which led me to finding this one.
