    Hi all,

As per the title I (31m) haven’t read a book since I was a child and I want to get back into it for many reasons that I won’t bore you with….

However, I’m overwhelmed by the choices and I don’t know where to start! I know I want to read a shorter book that isn’t too advanced as I need to make sure I stay engaged.

I’m not even sure what genre I want to look at.

    Any help appreciated!

EDIT: thanks all for the suggestions, some really good inspirations to look into

    1. Try Andy Weir. Books are approachable, mainstream and very entertaining. The Martian and Project Hail Mary are both fantastic books and a good entry to Science Fiction which is a very broad genre. His writing is very linear, vocabulary is not complex or trying too hard. The science might be considered hard, but he writes in easy to digest bites that keep the story flowing with you crossing your eyes trying to figure out interstellar travel or quantum mechanics. The stories are great and will give you a nice ideas of what you might be steered towards. If you want fantasy, the best entry IMO is Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson for a nice trilogy with really cool magic. If you want a quest and just one book, read Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames, more about the journey and characters that magic, cool monsters too.

Matthew Reilly is a very fast paced, action packed author with a number of great standalones. His language is fairly simple, but his stories have a lot of twists and turns, perfect for not too advanced but still engaging IMO. Two of my faves are Temple (for action adventure) and Contest (for a sci-fi touch).

    3. A few years ago I need something short and easy to read to get back to reading regularly and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes really got me on a roll! Short and still kept me engaged the whole time. Now I am averaging 1-2 books a month!

    4. What interests do you have what tv or movies do you enjoy? There’s a million choices out there and we all enjoy different subjects.

    5. I started really reading again around 38 when my high schooler kept prompting me to read To Kill a Mockingbird. I out of off for a long ti because it’s an older book I thought it would be too slow for my adhd brain but it was perfect and really brought me back to reading. Been a couple years nlw

Also your local library should have a librarian book suggestion based on your interests. Also free way to start getting into reading without spending a lot, books can get pricey.

Lord of the Flies is a classic and a short. An amazing series I read was the Silo series by Hugh Howey, there are four books but each one is a few short stories to make the book. I thought they were very well written, interesting and believable! Good luck!
