I’m looking for a book for my boyfriend, I’ve got him into reading in the past year- I read Stephen King and have got him to read Shawshank, The Gunslinger, and he’s currently reading The Stand, and he’s read a few other thriller books etc which he loves. However he is a huge fan of all things space and time, he made me watch all of the Brain Cox series on the planets, and he’s super passionate about the philosophy of time and how we’re all ‘insignificant’- the whole existential crisis vibe.

So basically I’m looking for a fiction book with themes on space and the concept of time but also a good story as I genuinely haven’t seen any mentioned. Also he might know more than most about this stuff but he’s not a scientist lol so nothing that a normal person won’t understand).

Has anyone read anything like this? If it helps to be specific, he loves all the space films like The Martian and Interstellar as they’re genuinely interesting stories too.

    1. Also I’m aware The Martian is a book but he’s watched this film so many times so I think starting with another book would be better

    2. _Children of Time_ takes place over millennia, and follows the collapse and revival of civilization on a human colony ship. At the same time, a virus released by humans accidentally causes jumping spiders to evolve at incredible speed, eventually developing a civilization of their own comparable to that of humans. It’s a book with a truly epic scope, and some deep philosophical themes, wrapped up in a great story.

    3. He would probably love *Einstein’s Dreams* by Alan Lightman. Basically it’s a collection of short stories that each explore our world as it would be if time simply worked differently.

    4. *The Light of Other Days* by Arthur C. Clarke and Stepen Baxter using wormhole technology to view the past

    5. The Three Body Trilogy by Cixin Liu – “The Three Body Problem”, “The Dark Forest”, and “Death’s End”

“Rendezvous With Rama”, by Arthur C. Clarke
