I like to read out loud to my girlfriends (ages 40-60) on backpacking trips and we've only made it through a few books with our limited time together. They really enjoyed Hatchet, Tuesdays with Morrie, Animal Farm and Wonder. Give us something interesting and insightful to talk about on the trails! (Less than 200 pages)

Sounds like you’re looking for something shorter, then? I’m unclear on how long it takes to read a book…
*Finna*, by Nino Cipri. What if you worked at an IKEA and there was a wormhole that a customer fell into? Kind of silly premise but really fun explorations of what it means to work retail, what to do when a romantic relationship falls apart, etc.
*Upright Women Wanted*, by Sarah Gailey. Futuristic dystopian Western with renegade librarians. Kind of like if the Handmaid’s tale was shorter and more inclusive, and a bit more joyful.
Bill Bryson’s *[A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail](https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000S1LSAM/).*
Maybe a classic mystery, like *Murder on the Orient Express?* I’m pretty sure I first read *And Then There Were None* for the first time on a backpacking trip. Short books and quick reads.
I loved when my friend read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer to us on a camping trip. It’s 225 pages so I don’t know if that’s considered short or long in your eyes!
{{a backpack filled with sunsets by Ifeanyi Ogbo}}
Oh, also, what about books of short stories? My partner and I really loved reading *Changing Planes* by Ursula K. Le Guin out loud to each other.
A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L. Peck.
A short story at 110 pages, Thought provoking & entertaining
An ordinary family man, geologist, and Mormon, Soren Johansson has always believed he’ll be reunited with his loved ones after death in an eternal hereafter. Then, he dies. Soren wakes to find himself cast by a God he has never heard of into a Hell whose dimensions he can barely grasp: a vast library he can only escape from by finding the book that contains the story of his life.

In honor of the passing of Nelson DeMille, I suggest The Gold Coast.
