Hi, so I’m 25F and most of what I read is either YA or Middle Grade. I’ve found that I don’t really like most adult books and it’s really hard to find adult books that I like. I like adult thrillers sometimes, and I really enjoy adult books like Legends and Lattes, House in the Cerulean Sea, and other adult books with that same kind of vibe, but it’s hard to find those. Any recommendations? Is this a bad thing that I most enjoy YA and Middle Grade?

    1. First of all, no it’s not a bad thing, people like what people like and that’s fine. You should try some New Adult novels. Some authors who mostly write YA, write New Adult as well. That might be the best gateway into Adult

I’ve pretty much found that we like what we like and that’s perfectly fine. Reading things you enjoy is much more fun than trying to force read things that don’t interest you.

    3. You should try cozy adult books, maybe.

But, no one can even *know* what you eat unless you tell them so… Why does it matter!

    4. No, it’s not a bad thing. I know plenty of people – intelligent, well-educated people to boot – who love reading NA/YA.

It’s not my genre at all but frankly, as a high school teacher, it’d probably do me good to read more YA.

As others have said, it sounds like the cozy genre is one you enjoy, so maybe look for that.

Try cozy mysteries.  I think they will have the right vibes.

Also have you tried KJ Klune’s other work? If you like it try Alex Harrow. Try Fairy Bargains of Prospect Hill by Miller.

    6. it’s really not bad trust me. i’m almost 30 in few years time and i still read YA books. i just end up always picking them up & not realising it’s YA.

    7. I find YA books better suited to my reading style. I can read other kinds and enjoy some of them, especially if they are single POV, but YA fantasy series is where i get the most enjoyment.

From what you are saying, would it be correct to assume that what you like about young-adult fiction is the hit-every-beat plots with a satisfying emotional payoff along with characters who — though they may display emotional complexity — fulfil archetypal roles and, when good, are easy to empathise with?

In which case, you might like:

    9. I do not think it is a bad thing. I have to read a lot of middle grade, YA and fairly tales for my job (i work at a library) and I usually enjoy them a great deal, there are many i do not have to read or do not have to read the entire series but i still choose to! There are some very high-quality works being published for young readers nowadays!

We read for enjoyment so just do what brings you joy!

One of my favorite books is Keedie (and its pre-cursor, A Kind of Spark) which is a very short middle grade book.

if you like cozy books, I would try the rest of T. J Klune’s work (Under the Whispering Door for example is a lovely book) or some cozy crime books.
