I've only read YAs and middle school literature, chick-lit romance, and some Murukami. Lately, I've been considering stepping out of my reading comfort zone.
I'm open to reading classics but my first time with it wasn't enjoyable. It was Hawthorne's The Letter Scarlet, but I realized that my comprehension of the English language isn't to that level yet, so I basically DNF'd it. I felt the proses are too much for me and as a non-native English speaker, reading something like that isn't for me yet.
I prefer to read something 'easier' to understand. I love writing styles that are whimsical and almost lyrical but also modern, if that makes sense.
As for length, novels and novellas are fine but I might not read anything over 800 pages.
Any genre is fine except high fantasy.
