I need help deciphering some older English writing. I’m reading the collection of short stories by Le Fanu that includes the famous Camilla. In one story, The Watcher, it’s explained at the end who the protagonist is haunted by. I gathered by the passage that the ship’s captain had had some love affair with the daughter of one of his crew but I dont understand this passage about the father. Can someone with a better understanding of this old English style explain it to me?

“The father had visited the frailty of his unhappy child with extreme harshness, and even brutality, and it was said that she had died heartbroken.”

Does that mean he beat the girl? I’m not sure what visited the frailty means?
