This will be about the 100th time I’ve recommended it, but A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck.
The spoiler-free synopsis is this: a man dies and goes to hell. But hell isn’t a burning inferno where you’re tortured for all eternity. It’s a gigantic library. You’re always young. You never get sick. You can eat whatever you want. You’ll even be surrounded by likeminded bibliophiles.
In order to get out of hell, you have to find the book in this library that perfectly—without error—tells the story of your life.
If you think that sounds pretty good, read the book, and you’ll see how hellish it actually is.
