I have really enjoyed the two series by Mackey Chandler, April and Family Law. And am looking at finding something similar.
- Prefer female protagonist.
- Prefer no out and out Mary Sue types… I know April et al from the above series is a bit Mary Sue-ish, but I'm mostly enjoying the setting.
- Prefer space and/or near future setting.
- Something similar to the above series would be nice (but not Ell Donsai, read but not a huge fan).
- Doesn't have to be desperately hard sci-fi, but not a huge fan of fantasy.
- No harem or overt erotica. (Don't mind sex, I'm an adult, but I can find my particular preferred flavour of erotica elsewhere in great quantities.)
- Not really interested in a protagonist whose only real interest is in finding a man (or woman) whether or not she does IDC.
- Can be YA but on the more adult side.
- Would prefer a series, either ongoing or finished
- Would prefer Kindle Unlimited, but if not would help if it were available on Kindle (or Google Books).
I've read and enjoyed Tony Corden's Stork Tower (and the follow up series that I've forgotten the name of), plus his various books as Ethan Stand.
Read the El Donsai series and other similar books by the same author but am not a huge fan.
I can probably refine my request a little if I can see some suggestions.

Have you read Gideon the Ninth? The beginning of the great Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir?
*Embassytown* by China Mieville
The Zoey Ashe trilogy is pretty good!
A Memory Called Empire / A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine — Space sci-fi duology about an ambassador trying to keep her small space station from being absorbed by an empire. A lot of it is about how different people communicate and understand each other. Heavy on politics and covert actions and culture clash. Very well written and a very impressive female protagonist — she doesn’t know how to fire a weapon, but she can move the levers to turn an empire.
Anything by Joanna Russ or James Tiptree Jr (aka Alice Sheldon)
