I loved all the books by William Sleator. Although I've read a lot of sci-fi, I haven't found better books that are that memorable. I also enjoyed Remnants by KA Applegate a lot back when I was younger. Neal Shusterman is next closest.
What I'm looking for:

easy to read, fast-paced with action. For some reason adult sci-fi isn't as exciting. I don't want books that go into detail on what the trees look like, but one that focuses on the character interaction and actions and reads like a movie.

Neat sci-fi concepts that can get dark like time stops at midnight, a maze with parallel worlds, cloning, or putting people in strange situations like an endless house of stairs.

Usually someone thrust into a new world or situation, so readers learn the world along with the character.
