Not sure if this counts, but **American War** by Omar Al Akkad is a near-future cli-fi set during the second American Civil War (this time the issue is fossil fuels). It’s still north v south, and the book follows a young black girl in the south through adulthood and death. She begins the story as a peculiar but happy and inquisitive child, but once the war comes to her doorstep, her family must make a series of desperate choices that put her on a path to self-destruction – and destruction writ large. By the end, you’ll agree that she is anything but a protagonist, but you’ll also wonder whether, under the same conditions, you wouldn’t have done the exact same thing.
