I'm a complete beginner to reading books. The last time, I read a book was, when I was in middle school. I can't see myself trying to read a large epic story as a beginner, so I want to start small by reading an anthology of short stories in the mystery or fantasy genre.

I’m going to suggest Sharp Ends by Joe Abercrombie. It’s a collection of short stories set in the same world as his novels. If you like them and want to continue you can transition into the novels afterwards and already be familiar with the setting and some of the characters. It’s grimdark fantasy so it uses a lot of the familiar fantasy tropes but subverts them. For instance there aren’t the typical good guy v. bad guys. Everyone is morally grey.
